A Korea-US-Japan summit is being held once a year, and a plan to regularize military drills among Korea, the US and Japan is being pursued.
U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emmanuel met with Japanese reporters yesterday and said that the agreement is expected to be reached on the occasion of the Korea-US-Japan Summit to be held at Camp David on the 18th.
Cho Tae-yong, head of the National Security Office, also said on the 4th that “a consensus is being formed” regarding the regularization of the Korea-US-Japan summit.
Regarding the military exercises of the three countries, a high-ranking official in the presidential office said, “Korea, the US, and Japan have already resumed anti-submarine warfare training, search and detection training, and missile defense training.” We are setting up a training system for this.”
He added, “It is not the Asian version of NATO as much as it organizes training in specific fields.”
At this Korea-US-Japan summit, South Korea is expected to emphasize trilateral cooperation to deter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.
In November of last year, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the three countries announced the ‘Phnom Penh Statement’ and decided to share information related to North Korean missiles in real time, and plans to start this quickly are also expected to be discussed.
While South Korea focuses on the North Korean nuclear threat, the United States may suggest South Korea and Japan join forces in containing China.
Recently, US President Joe Biden issued an executive order requiring US capital to report investment plans to the government before investing in advanced semiconductors, quantum computing and artificial intelligence in China.
The US government is regulating private investment in China, but China is strongly opposing it, saying it is ‘politicization of trade’.
