Budget Day, the traditional opening of the parliamentary year, needs to be overhauled. On this day, the Royal House traditionally plays an important role with, among other things, a driving tour through the city center of The Hague, accompanied by soldiers, horses and music.
But fewer and fewer people are attending. In recent years, demonstrators have also used Budget Day to protest against the Oranges, who were part of the tour booed.
Behind the scenes we are now working on an extensive plan to make Budget Day a crowd puller again. The plans, which are in the hands of the NOS, involve the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as ministries, the municipality of The Hague and the House of Representatives themselves.
Driving tour remains
The document shows that the fixed elements, such as the tour with four carriages, the reading of the Speech from the Throne by King Willem-Alexander and the balcony scene, remain. But all kinds of activities are added, such as a meeting between the king and the public.
Budget Day through the years:
The plan for this third Tuesday in September consists of more than twenty ideas. On the Plein, near the Binnenhof, there should be a concert in the atmosphere of André Rieu on the Vrijthof in Maastricht. About 12,000 people attend each concert.
MPs would no longer have to drive to the Royal Theater in taped buses, but would first have breakfast with visitors and then walk to the temporary location for the Speech from the Throne.
The intention is that this year, on Tuesday September 17, the first changes will be visible. Which ones they are is still unknown. According to an insider, it will take years before the modernization of Budget Day is completed.
