Isinbajeva Faces Possible Expulsion from Viskrievijas Tautas Fronte
The Viskrievijas Tautas Fronte (ONF), founded by Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin and implicated in serious crimes in 2011, has announced plans to expel Russian athlete Yelena Isinbajeva, according to the Russian propaganda agency TASS.
Isinbajeva, 41, has been a member of the organization since 2018, but now a vote is taking place within the ONF that could result in her expulsion.
Recently, Spanish media reported that Isinbajeva was vacationing with her family in the Canary Islands. In the article, she was accused of supporting Russian aggression.
The world record holder in pole vaulting expressed her thoughts on social media. “In Russia, just like everywhere else in Europe, athletes belong to sports clubs. Until 2018, I represented the CSKA sports club and earned high honors and titles. Today, these titles only have symbolic meaning. I have never been a part of the Russian armed forces. I have never been a member of the State Duma or any political party,” Isinbajeva stated.
In Russia, these statements are seen as betrayal. For example, the President of the Republic of Dagestan in Russia ordered the renaming of the Makhachkala stadium. For the past six years, it had been named after Isinbajeva.
Now, Isinbajeva may face expulsion from the Viskrievijas Tautas Fronte.
