Plans for military bases in Exloo and Zweeloo canceled

There will be no military base in Zweeloo or Exloo. According to the Defense, both locations are not suitable for the construction of Rapidly Deployable Capacity Weapons Storage, also known as SIC.

This was decided by Secretary of State Gijs Tuinman (BBB). Both locations are excluded due to the number of homes that would be affected by the arrival of the military base. In addition, it is too damaging to the landscape. In Zweeloo, a depot would also cause disturbance in recreational areas.

In SIC, ammunition is stored in shipping containers that can be transported quickly and easily. As more ammunition needs to be stored, a new storage facility is being sought. The defense is looking at places in the north of Holland because of the connection with the Eemshaven, from where the transport takes place. There are now a few places in Friesland for this purpose.

In the first response, the councilor Erik Holties (BBC2014) in the city of Coevorden is happy. “I am very happy that Defense has finally come to the conclusion that the research area in our town is not suitable for a military base. A year ago we were actively seeking information about this.” It was reported that this village was attacked in February this year, when the location north of Zweeloo was mentioned.

“I’m also very happy for the local residents, who had to endure a very difficult time, which caused a lot of tension and uncertainty,” Holties continues. providing the clarity they have been waiting for. If all goes well, this good news is being announced at this time.” It previously emerged that there would be two campsites, a dairy farm and another farm in the area near Zweeloo in danger. That is certainly not the case now.

“I am glad that there is clarity,” replied the councilor Henk Zwiep (PvdA) from Borger-Odoorn. He noticed growing concerns among the residents of Exloo about the possible arrival of a military base. People are talking about it, asking: what does this mean? I’ve sat at people’s kitchen tables talking about moving or selling their business, even though they’re happily staying there.”

Despite positivism, the flag at Zwiep has not yet been raised: a definitive one water for a military base in both Zweeloo and Exloo provided. “We have now lost weight, but the cabinet could still return to it,” he says.

The city council of Borger-Odoorn has opposed the coming of a money storage center due to the presence of tourism and recreation, Astron, LOFAR and the UNESCO area De Hondsrug.

The De Haar training ground near Assen is still in the picture for a so-called training village, writes Secretary of State Tuinman. In a similar village, soldiers can train in ‘real’ conditions. Havelte-West was dropped as a location for a training village.
