Being comfortable and safe on the bicycle in Dresden and its surroundings: this should be made possible by the so-called “cycle highways”. The city examined four possible routes in a multi-year feasibility study. The result: thanks to the cycle paths it is possible to cycle on the wide and well-developed paths to Langebrück, Pirna, Freital or Radebeul.
According to the city, high speeds are possible on these routes and there is also plenty of room to drive side by side or overtake. In the main road network, it would be conceivable to implement it by widening the cycle paths, while in the secondary road network there could be cycle paths. Cars are also allowed on these, but they can only drive at a maximum speed of 30km / h. According to the city, car lanes will definitely not be eliminated for cycle highways.
The federal government would promote 75% of cycle freeways. The average cost of a cycle path is 2 million euros per kilometer. The results of the feasibility study are now under further examination, so a possible start of the works is still a long way off. More information is available at an information evening on 27 September in the New Town Hall Ballroom.
