Plano Deportivo UEFA reduces sanction to Hungary, one game behind closed doors and one conditional

The UEFA Appeal Committee partially upheld the appeal of the Hungarian Federation against the sanction it received for the discriminatory behavior of its supporters in the Eurocup, so that it will play its next two games behind closed doors, although the second is on hold for two years.

The resolution communicated this Wednesday by UEFA maintains the obligation for Hungary to display a banner with the slogan #EqualGame with the UEFA logo and the 100,000 fine to be paid by its federation in those matches.

On 9 July, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Discipline body imposed a sanction on Hungary for playing behind closed doors the next three matches that it would have to play at home in UEFA competitions, for which it has played with public their clashes in the qualifying phase for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, organized by FIFA.

The sanction is due to the behavior of the Hungarian fans during their commitments in the last European Championship, Hungary-Portugal on June 15 and Hungary-France on June 19 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest and Germany-Hungary on June 23 in Munich.

UEFA opened an investigation after Hungarian fans directed racist shouts at black players in France and displayed homophobic banners in the other two group stage matches, against Portugal and Germany.

The Hungarian government called the UEFA sanction “pathetic” and “cowardly” for the use of “snitches”, in the words of its foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó.
