Planning agencies draw firm conclusions about care for the vulnerable in corona times NOW

People with frail mental health have not always received the necessary care and guidance in the first months of the corona crisis, the Dutch planning agencies say on Thursday. In addition, arrears in education could have been prevented and the cabinet should not stick to a half meter society.

According to experts, family members and caregivers should be given priority protection resources in the next coronavirus revival, otherwise “inhuman situations” may arise.

“People with frail mental health deserve more attention,” the report said. An increase in the number of people with confused behavior has been reported since the corona crisis.

Backlogs in education can be avoided if former teachers and assistants are deployed, the planning agencies write. The implementation of online education appears to have been a good move, as it benefited students and enabled staff to be deployed more effectively.

The conclusions are set out in an advisory report requested by the Cabinet of the Social and Cultural Planning Office (SCP), the Central Planning Agency (CPB) and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL). In it, experts deal with socio-economic issues surrounding the consequences of the corona crisis.

‘Corona crisis also offers opportunities’

According to the SCP, CPB and PBL, the corona crisis also offers opportunities and the cabinet can achieve long-term goals faster. For example, the cabinet can make the country more sustainable, re-examine public services and work towards cleaner air.

In addition, “digital working” has been “tested” for months. According to the planning agencies, politicians should keep an eye on the long term and develop plans with some urgency for the possible retraining or retraining of large groups of elderly and lower educated people, because they are not prepared for alternative working methods.

‘Not sticking to one and a half meter society’

The planning agencies are of the opinion that the cabinet should not bite into one and a half meter society. “That can’t be the goal. People don’t want that and they certainly don’t want it as a new normal,” said the experts. According to the experts, the terminology used has a negative effect.

The planning agencies are still offering advice on how to prevent too many Dutch people from traveling by public transport or car in the near future. That report is expected before June 1.
