Plan your travel for the long Ascension weekend: ADAC Traffic Jam Forecast and Construction Sites

ADAC traffic jam forecast for the long Ascension weekend

Intensive excursion traffic and many construction sites

Munich/Kiel (16.05.2023) Travelers must at long
Ascension Day weekend Expect a lot of traffic jams. Stronger travel and excursion traffic and more than nationwide 1200 construction sites require a lot of patience. For Schleswig-Holstein, the state office for road construction and traffic reports over 30 construction measures on motorways and federal roads that are likely to lead to impairments. Since there is no school on Friday in the federal states of Berlin, Bremen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Thuringia and Schleswig-Holstein, many use the holiday for a long weekend on the coasts.

The ADAC expects the first traffic jam on Wednesday between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. There should be excursion traffic on Friday and Saturday, but we don’t expect any major ones here

Traffic jams. The return day is likely to be Sunday again, with traffic jams from afternoon to evening. The main traffic jams in the north are: the greater Hamburg area, before and after the Elbe tunnel and on the A23 towards the North Sea islands and on the A1 towards the Baltic Sea. There are delays here due to construction work. In the cities of Lübeck and Kiel, extensive renovation work is currently being carried out on bridges and buildings on important main roads, which are also causing massive traffic disruptions. If you can, you should choose to arrive early in the morning or leave in the evening. Otherwise, the following applies: Bring patience and plan your time. Expect a delay of 30 to 60 minutes. Detour routes should only be used where recommended or signposted. Note for holidaymakers in Denmark: The border controls that have existed for several years when entering Denmark from Germany have been significantly relaxed since May 12th. Travelers from Germany are only checked in exceptional cases. As a result, there should only be traffic jams and waiting times at the Ellund (A7 west of Flensburg) and Krusau (B200 north of Flensburg) border crossings in exceptional cases.

The nationwide location

In traffic jams: form an emergency lane!

What a lot of people don’t know is that the emergency lane has to be formed when traffic is coming to a standstill, and not just when the emergency services come from behind with blue lights and sirens.

And this is how the emergency lane works: Anyone driving in the left lane turns to the left, while drivers in all other lanes turn to the right. If it is not possible to form the emergency lane correctly in narrow construction site areas due to significantly narrower lanes, it is recommended to drive with sufficient distance. In an emergency, drivers can merge into the right lane and thus free up the left lane for emergency services.
