Plan to reduce vehicle congestion in parcel deliveries

“They say they can’t walk in their neighborhoods because there are a lot of parcels for home deliveries, you need to do something better, this is chaos.”

These are some of the complaints received by the President of the Borough of Manhattan Mark Levine and for this he indicates an action plan called “Campaign to congestion” or in English “Campaign to Curb Congestion”.

The plan seeks to help reduce traffic in the Big Apple by addressing e-commerce and the city’s congestion problem.

“A series of measures to manage it so it doesn’t harm traffic, the environment or the quality of life in New York so much,” Levine said.

But one of the main goals is to make e-commerce deliveries more efficient, as 2.4 million products are bought online, packaged, shipped, delivered to residents and businesses in the five boroughs every day, causing delivery vehicles to overwhelm. the streets of the neighborhood.

“We want to get it off the street and sidewalks, do it in a garage where they can get it out of public space, and then ideally go into houses on a bicycle,” Levine added.

Manhattan receives the highest concentration of these deliveries per square mile, the plan would also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve road safety, and further fund public transportation in the city.

Likewise, the proposal suggests the construction of public infrastructure for charging electric bicycles, similar to the recent pilot plan for charging stations for distributors.

Levine says the real challenge lies in coordinating various city and state agencies to truly make e-commerce delivery more environmentally sustainable, safe and efficient in the Big Apple.
