Plague: 22 cases – Over 10,000 animals slaughtered – 2024-08-01 01:09:49

In 22 the number of cases of plague of small ruminants in Greek territory so far. According to the data so far, twenty of them are located in Thessalyone in Corinth and one in Attica.

Also, so far they have been slaughters of 10,768 animals and another 2,000 are expected immediately.

As the Minister of Agriculture and Food pointed out, George Stratakoswho participated in the extraordinary meeting of the Attica Region “We are currently in the scientific investigation phase. We are waiting for the results that will be brought to us by the veterinarians who are dealing with this specific issue”.

He added that all the routes of the animals are traced, noting that “when we came to take a sample in Attica, as we did in Corinth, this did not happen by chance. It was done by following specific flows of animals and seeing from the original infected units which animals have come in and which animals have gone out.”

He also pointed out that “every time we have a confirmed case in a facility, according to the European protocol, all the animals are killed or landfilled and then the facility is disinfected and quarantined.”

It is noted that just yesterday, by decision of the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Costa Ciara the movement of sheep and goats for breeding, fattening and slaughter was prohibited throughout Greece.

The specific decision was taken for preventive reasons, with the aim of limiting the spread and eradicating the plague of small ruminants.
