Plácido Domingo on the mend

Ten days after the announcement of his coronavirus disease, Plácido Domingo has good news for his fans: he has ended his stay in the clinic, is now staying in his home in the Mexican seaside resort of Acapulco and is feeling good, the 79-year-old said via Facebook. The infection was recognized early because Domingo was under medical supervision due to other diseases – this had proven to be useful. The Spanish opera star called on his fans to observe the official preventive measures and to stay at home if possible.

Half a million dollars for troubled artists

In addition, Domingo has closed an annoying chapter: he quit the US opera artist union AGMA and donates half a million dollars to charity. As a reminder: AGMA had investigated the harassment allegations against the century singer and in their surveys had come to the conclusion that the allegations were credible. As a result, according to newspaper reports, AGMA and Domingo agreed on an agreement: The world star should donate a substantial sum, the union would forego further steps. These measures would have been difficult to implement anyway. The union should have scheduled disciplinary proceedings and interviewed witnesses – given the delicate nature of the matter, it is uncertain whether they would have appeared. The amicable settlement with Domingo, however, unexpectedly burst at the beginning of March: A leading member of the union informed the Associated Press news agency about details of the investigation report and criticized the planned payment of the singer icon as “quid pro quo”.

In mid-March, Domingo took it in hand again: he announced his resignation from the union and the donation of half a million dollars (around 456.00 euros) to a fund for opera workers in times of crisis and programs to combat sexual harassment.

Investigation completed in L.A.

The allegations against Domingo go back to the 1980s. The Spaniard is said to have misused his power as a stage star, but also as director of the opera houses in Washington and Los Angeles, to initiate intimate encounters. In the AGMA investigation report, according to the media, 27 people testify that they either fell victim to inappropriate behavior from Domingo or had observed it. The Los Angeles Opera House has also launched an investigation and has now completed it. The report revealed ten allegations of inappropriate behavior; however, the allegation that Domingo made stage engagements dependent on sexual favors could not be substantiated.
