The Archbishop of Sherbrooke, Mgr Luc Cyr, on Monday added his voice to those of religious leaders who are asking to be able to welcome more faithful in places of worship.
In an interview with TVA Nouvelles, he supported his request by the upcoming opening of cinemas and the significant drop in COVID-19 cases in Estrie.
Currently, places of worship can accommodate a maximum of 10 people and 25 for funerals.
“The cinemas will be able to accommodate up to 250 people and we only 10? It doesn’t hold water in my opinion. We have the capacity to receive more faithful in a completely safe way ”, insisted Mgr Cyr.
According to the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke, an average-sized church could accommodate around 50 people while respecting social distancing.
“Lent has started and Easter is coming. Last year we couldn’t celebrate it. There is a psychological distress which sets in, it is important to make places of worship accessible, ”continued Mgr Luc Cyr.
