PKS Facing a Conundrum: Aspiring to Become Anies Baswedan’s Running Mate

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Prosperous Justice Party or PKS revealed that there is a general chairman (ketum) of a political party (parpol) who wants to join the Coalition for Change as long as they become a vice presidential candidate (Cawapres) Anies Baswedan. It is known, the Coalition for Change has agreed to carry Anies Baswedan as a presidential candidate (Capres) 2024.

“Now there are several party leaders who want to meet, which they then require that the chairman generally wants to become vice presidential candidate,” said Deputy Chairman of the PKS Shura Council Sohibul at the Secretariat for Change, South Jakarta on Friday, March 24, 2023.

Sohibul revealed that the political party chairmen were outside the coalition members. He said that so far the three coalition parties have indeed communicated with other parties. Although he did not explicitly explain the political party in question, Sohibul said that this political party was a parliamentary political party.

Guess what the chairman of the political party meant by PKS

Currently, there are nine political parties in Parliament. Meanwhile, three political parties, as PKS is called, have been included in the Coalition for Change: NasDem, Democrats and PKS. If the political parties referred to by PKS are outside the Coalition for Change, it means that there are six remaining political parties: the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Gerindra, Golkar, PAN, PPP and PKB.

As for PDIP as the winning party in the 2019 election, it seems far from the possibility that it wants to join the Coalition for Change. Moreover, running for vice president Anies. PDIP Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri has long ago confirmed that PDIP has its own presidential candidate.

Secretary General PDIP Hasto Kristiyanto has repeatedly emphasized that a presidential candidate must come from his party’s cadres. “Yes, the cooperation offer, of course, in the context of a presidential candidate, comes from the PDI Perjuangan,” said Hasto in his statement, Monday, March 13, 2023.

Hasto said PDIP had carried out a systemic cadre process and assigned cadres at various levels in an ideal perspective.

“The party carries a presidential candidate from internal party cadres, that is what the PDI Perjuangan is fighting for,” he said.

Likewise with the Gerindra Party. Gerindra chairman Prabowo Subianto has become his party’s preferred presidential candidate. Deputy Chairman of the Party’s Board of Trustees Gerindra Hashim Djojohadikusumo closed Prabowo’s option to become vice presidential candidate.
