“Customers of PKO Bank Polski can already confirm their identity with mDowodem”, i.e. the password sent out on Tuesday to all in the message is not true. Well, unless the authors meant some customers and/or some outlets and/or verification understood separately from the possibility of settling banking matters after this verification. A premature start at PKO BP is more of a PR move than a fully-fledged solution, as one of our editors found out the hard way.
Big change (but not this time yet)
The planned target shape of the mObywatel 2.0 application, which Minister Janusz Cieszyński talked about in the spring, deserves support. Despite the postponement of some deadlines, the assumptions are correct and citizens will certainly benefit more than once from the digitization progressing also in government services.
One of the promises made by the head of the Ministry of Digitization was the possibility of verifying the identity “worn” in the aforementioned application mDowodem in the institutions. All institutions were supposed to be ready for this on September 1 this year. The largest of the banks decided to step out of line and today, on August 29, announced its readiness and implementation of a new option.
“Customers of PKO Bank Polski during a visit to the bank’s branches can already confirm their data using mDowodu. The Bank introduces this solution a few days before the statutory date set for September 1, when bank customers will be able to use mDowodu”, we read in the Tuesday morning communiqué of the PKO BP press office.
Not without a shadow of a doubt, we went to one of the local branches of PKO BP to experience a new quality.
It does NOT work for me
“It always falls on me to do such experiments”, an employee of a Wrocław bank commented on her friends, who probably got a client for the first time without an ID, but with a prepared mObywatel 2.0 application.
Customer logged in to the application, “Confirm your data” option selected (you must know that the application – in accordance with previous assumptions – promises the correct operation of this function only from September 1; but we saw the PKO BP message today), QR code reader ready, ball by the bank employee.
According to the instructions, it generates a QR code in the system, which the customer should scan in order to provide the bank with their data.
What was successful during mDowodem verification at PKO BP:
generating a QR code, displaying it on a tablet used by the client, scanning the QR code with the mObywatel 2.0 application, sending the data to the bank, accepting the client’s data in electronic form.
What failed:
transition from identity verification to further activities in banking systems.
So you can say that the truth is (yes, yes) half-truth. Yes, it was possible to verify the customer’s identity using only the mObywatel application. Excitement at this stage, however, is premature if the verification is to be followed by further handling of matters at the bank.
Meanwhile, even though the employee saw the client’s data on her monitor, the identity confirmation procedure itself worked, as she said – she could not perform any other action later, “she had no option”, as a result, it was impossible to even preview the client’s data or verify the status of his account .
We have asked the press office for comment, we will publish it when it arrives. And on September 1, we will return to the facilities.
We are also waiting for your first experiences with mDowodem in banks. We are waiting for applications at [email protected].
