PKB Rejects Proposal to Move Forward 2024 Regional Elections

PKB General Chairperson Muhaimin Iskandar or Cak Imin responding to discourse that the 2024 regional elections have been moved forward to September. Cak Imin said that PKB actually rejected this discourse.

“Actually, PKB rejects the promotion of regional elections,” said Cak Imin after attending the Anies volunteer communication forum meeting in the Pejaten area, South Jakarta, Saturday (22/9/2023).

Even so, Cak Imin continue to submit the results of regional election schedule decisions to the DPR and the government. The Deputy Chair of the DPR RI admitted that there was no problem if the regional elections were moved forward.

“But it’s up to the factions, whether it’s agreed to go forward or stay on schedule, I don’t think it’s a problem,” he said.

Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian previously submitted a proposal for a Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) for regional elections to Commission II of the DPR RI to change the schedule for the simultaneous regional elections. Tito proposed that simultaneous regional elections be held in September 2024, two months earlier than specified.

Tito conveyed this in the working meeting (Raker) of Commission II DPR RI together with the KPU and Bawaslu, Wednesday (20/9) evening. Tito said one of the reasons for speeding up the regional elections was to avoid a regional head vacancy on January 1 2025.

“The choice of voting time for the 2024 simultaneous regional elections is recommended in September 2024. This is also to consider that there is sufficient time for the dispute process before January 1 2025, there is approximately 3 months to complete the process starting from the recapitulation and plenary determination winner,” said Tito at the meeting.

According to him, the acceleration proposal regional elections This also needs to be anticipated if there are two rounds of presidential elections in June. He also said that advancing the time for the regional elections would speed up the inauguration of regional heads.

“By advancing the voting to September 2024, it will once again speed up the inauguration of elected regional heads in 2024, namely at least January 1 2025,” said Tito.
