Pizzeria-eatery De Rooie Kater on the Hogeweg in Zuidlaren was burnt to ashes on Monday in a major fire.
The fire brigade quickly scaled up to a major fire around 5 p.m. The flames soon exploded from the property. Clouds of smoke could be seen in the surrounding area. A fire chief says there were no people in the restaurant. The property was closed.
It is still a guess as to the cause of the fire. “The roofing felt is now removed from the flat roof to extinguish the smoldering fire underneath,” said the fire chief.
The fire in the Red Kater attracted a lot of attention. “We saw the report of a major fire, but were just too late”, say Jan Dolfing and Christina Nijholt from Assen. “We saw a few more flames, but it now seems under control.”
The Hogeweg will remain closed to traffic for the time being.
