Pix expects the south variant of the B 31 West and considers the project to be untenable – Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district

Further construction of the B 31 from Gottenheim to Breisach

Before the federal election, Berlin will not say how the B 31 to Breisach will be built. The Green Member of Parliament Reinhild Pix is convinced of this. And he reckons with a south variant.

The green member of the state parliament, Reinhold Pix, does not expect the Federal Ministry of Transport to announce its decision on the route to continue building the B 31 West before the federal elections at the end of September. He himself also assumes that one of the southern variants will be chosen for this second construction phase from Gottenheim to Breisach, in contrast to the northern variant initially pursued by the planning authorities.

Pix again chairman of the association against further construction

Pix, who has been a member of the state parliament of the Breisgau constituency since March, through which the new federal road would lead, spoke at the general meeting of the Association for Environmentally Sound Transport Planning Kaiserstuhl-Tuniberg (VLO) in Ihringen. Pix was re-elected as chairman, the green district councilor Wolfgang Mössner as his deputy.

The association refuses to continue building the road, regardless of the variant. Pix was convinced that the further construction would cost a multiple of the originally estimated 50 million euros. The cost-benefit factor of the project had deteriorated to such an extent that no Federal Transport Minister could maintain or even implement this plan. All the more so since there is already a parallel connection for inter-regional traffic with the motorway and today’s B 31 from the Bad Krozingen junction to Breisach. Even if the project was upgraded to the urgent need of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan, it is not feasible from a budgetary point of view. And in terms of climate policy, the road no longer fits in with the times, Pix continues.

Priority required for the double-track expansion of the S-Bahn

The VLO calls for traffic development to be concentrated on the double-track expansion of the rail link between Breisach and Freiburg. Precisely because the Breisgau S-Bahn is prone to failure and many people have switched back to their cars, the route has to be upgraded as originally planned. A cross-border rail connection to Alsace would give local public transport an additional boost.
