Pistorius said that in a few years, the United States will focus more on the Indo-Pacific region, while Europe may face new challenges related to the possible drawdown of the US military.
“We need to get more involved in security on our continent, we have about 5-8 years to build up our military,” Pistorius said.
However, he did not elaborate on why he named this period.
As the German defense minister pointed out, in order to support the invasion of Ukraine, Russia significantly increases the production of weapons, as well as poses a threat to the Baltic states, Georgia and Moldova.
“At the end of this decade we may face danger. But then we will be ready for it,” hinted Pistorius. Pistorius also said Europe knows it will have to match US aid to Ukraine if the US cannot agree on new funding.
