Oscar Pistorius wants freedom. A former disabled athlete is serving a thirteen-year sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He is now applying for parole. In his cell in the South African Republic, he learns Latin and also met the father of the murdered woman.
It was a tragedy that went around the world in February 2013. At home, Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, who he said he thought was a thief, through the bathroom door. Four years later, the Supreme Court of Appeal handed down the final sentence: 13 years and five months. “He should have been imprisoned for life. The last three bullets were fired with the intention of killing her,” the sister of the murdered Simone Steenkamp said at the time.
Pistorius’ sentence expires in 2030, but according to South African law, he can be released on parole next spring. And he does what he can. For example, he recently met the father of a murdered girlfriend.

Reeva Steenkamp was 29 years old and made a living as a model. She was killed on Valentine’s Day – the day of all lovers. Pistorius was not wearing braces when it happened. He lost both legs from the knees down due to a birth defect as a one-year-old toddler.
But he never gave up the fight with the handicap. In the sprint, he won Paralympic gold in the 100, 200 and 400 meters. As the first disabled runner, he qualified for the World Championships of healthy athletes and won silver in the relay. Now in his cell in Pretoria, South Africa, he leads a theology club and likes to garden. He grows vegetables in his prison garden.
