Pisas: A working group must make recommendations to deal with beaches

At a public forum organized by the government yesterday, Pisas proposed the creation of a working group to address the concerns of the local community and interest groups in these regions. Residents of Lagun and Jeremi have long been concerned about development projects in their area. According to the Prime Minister, designs for the area’s beaches have been created by young architects, who he says have a new, modern perspective on development. He emphasizes that older generations must be open to these changes and understand that the world does not stand still. “As a director, I want to continue standing behind this vision so that I can be proud of the progress I have made for Curaçao,” says Pisas.

Several areas of concern were raised during the forum. For example, there is criticism that the residents have not been properly involved in the plans for the development of Lagun and Jeremi. Pisas recognizes this problem and says that he is now actively talking to the local population. He also takes to heart recommendations from MP Steven Croes, who advocates involving all parties involved in preventing abuse.

The Prime Minister says that action must be taken quickly, as there is money to improve the beaches. If these are not used in time, they can expire and be used for other purposes. To prevent this, Pisas asks the working group to find a concrete solution within a few weeks.

National order

At the same time, lawyer Jeff Sybesma warns that construction work on Curaçao’s public beaches, such as in Lagun, could be against the law. According to Sybesma, beaches are legally owned by the Country of Curacao and may only be sold or used by third parties with special permission.

It emphasizes that any construction that reduces public beach space, without a proper legal basis, could be illegal. Sybesma mentions that these issues must be regulated by national order. “The States are in charge of the beaches, not the government,” said Sybesma.

The proposed working group should include representatives from the government, residents, the Carmabi nature group, the Domain Management government group, the Ministry of Transport and Spatial Planning and the architects working on the design of the projects. .
