The Republican Arsenals of Pisa will host the exhibition from 1 January to 7 April 2024 Steve McCurry. Icons: in over 90 shots an effective summary of the vast production of one of the greatest masters of contemporary photography and a point of reference for a very large audience who recognize in his photographs a unique and direct way of looking at our time.
The exhibition offers visitors a symbolic journey into the complex universe of experiences and emotions that has characterized his images for over 40 years, starting from the famous shot of Sharbat Gula, the Afghan girl that McCurry photographed in 1984 in the Peshawar refugee camp in Pakistan and who has become an absolute icon of world photography. From India to Burma, from Mongolia to Africa, up to Italy: with her photographs Steve McCurry puts us in contact with the most distant ethnic groups and the most disparate social conditions.
Shots that capture stories of joy and aggregation, of loneliness and suffering, of resilience and solidarity, of family and friendship and highlight a human condition made of universal feelings, of gazes whose pride affirms, beyond geographical and cultural borders the same dignity. With his photography McCurry crosses borders and allows everyone to get to know up close a world that is increasingly destined for great changes.
The exhibition, organized by Artika and curated by Biba Giacchetti with the Sudest57 Mostre Team, begins with an extraordinary sequence of portraits and develops through a free path that embraces different themes and situations. “Icons” is also the title of a publication that constitutes the exhibition catalogue, an exclusive dialogue in which Steve reveals the stories and background of his most loved images.
Through his particular photographic style, Steve McCurry places his attention on the humanity of the subject. With her shots she transmits to us the human face that is hidden in every corner of the earth, even the most dramatic. Self Henri Cartier-Bresson was “the eye of his century” (the twentieth century), McCurry is probably the contemporary photographer most inclined to take up his legacy. Thanks to his marked sensitivity, he is capable of penetrating the depths of the chosen subjects, revealing the profound similarity of all individuals on earth, beyond socio-cultural difficulties. The photographer always tries to give a face to the situations in which he finds himself immersed as a reporter, especially if these circumstances are extremely tragic.
Curiosity is the engine of his research, capable of pushing him, since he was a teenager, to cross every border, be it physical, linguistic or cultural. In each of his photos Steve McCurry tells us a story which, once revealed, is able to communicate the complexity of an entire context.
These are McCurry’s words: “Most of my photos are rooted in people. I look for the moment in which the most genuine soul appears, in which experience is imprinted on a person’s face. I try to convey what it can be a person caught in a broader context that we could call the human condition. I want to convey the visceral sense of beauty and wonder that I have found in front of me, during my travels, when the surprise of being a stranger mixes with the. joy of familiarity”.
The exhibition itinerary allows us to admire some of Steve McCurry’s greatest photographic projects. Narrative insights will be present in the audio guide which, for the occasion, will be downloadable via an app on visitors’ smartphones.
