The freshman boss argued he deserved more time in Turin after the club qualified for the Champions League on the last day of the Serie A season.
Andrea Pirlo has made a final public case to top management at Juventus that he should be selected for next season, saying he has put the club “on the right track” during his first year at the helm.
His men capped a positive week on Sunday by securing a Champions League berth with a 4-1 win over Bologna and a draw in Napoli. They also won the Coppa Italia last Wednesday.
However, Pirlo’s defense of his record may be compromised by an early European exit in Porto and the lack of a Serie A title charge.
Editor’s choices
What was said?
“I was never afraid,” said Pirlo DAZN. “It took me a while to create this routine for workouts. It took a while for the guys to understand what I wanted, it wasn’t easy to step in with so many champions but everyone helped me out.
“I improved, it was a complicated season, but it was useful for my development.
“We are on the right track as long as we help each other and run towards the target together. We’ve missed all of these things a couple of times this season.
“In the end, we got the result [of Champions League qualification]. If we start over together next season, we will have a solid foundation. “
Four-game vital race
When Juventus lost 3-0 to AC Milan on May 9, it seemed virtually impossible for them to qualify for the Champions League. Pirlo would have little hope of remaining in Turin beyond the countryside.
They have, however, won their last three Serie A matches and knocked out Atalanta in the Coppa Italia final.
It’s unclear if that’s enough for Pirlo to save his job, but it certainly gave him cause for discussion.
