Pirelli has rejected a challenge from Bridgestone and is reported to have officially decided to become F1 tire supplier until 2028, with an announcement to be made next week. Pirelli, which is managing the tires for this weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix, had been expected to make a successful bid among paddock officials for several weeks, but the final step in a process that has been underway since March will be the FIA World Motorsport The contract was approved by the council.
Bridgestone, which has been away from F1 since 2010, has passed the first stage of approval by the FIA, along with Pirelli. The matter was then passed on to Stefano Domenicali and the F1 organization, who considered a commercial package that included elements such as track signage and title sponsorship for the Grand Prix. The tender contract was more complex than previous contracts, covering seasons from 2025 to 2027, with an option for 2028. In addition to providing the FIA F2 Championship and F3 Championship in one package, it also includes significant sustainability elements. Bridgestone is known for making big commercial offers, and at one point it was thought that it could snatch the contract from its Italian rival. However, Pirelli also had a strong package to convince Domenicali. One of the biggest challenges Bridgestone faced was having to develop tires for its current car to use under the 2025 regulations and completely different tires for the 2026 regulations. Additionally, the FIA is still keen to ban blankets from 2025, meaning tires that would work without them also needed to be developed. This technical challenge, combined with a question mark over how the initial test program will work for teams concerned that rivals could join and gain an advantage with knowledge of the new tires, could undermine Pirelli’s claims. He helped make it even stronger. Pirelli has made it clear that this new contract will be his last. Pirelli, which was a supplier for 18 years between 2011 and 2028, will exit F1 with little accomplished in terms of brand building. That means F1 will be looking for a new partner for 2029 and beyond, giving Bridgestone and other candidates the chance to bid knowing they won’t be competing with established incumbent suppliers.
