Pirates of the Caribbean: Will Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) still have a place in the 100% female spin-off?

Franchise Pirates of the Caribbean currently preparing not one but two reboots, including a female version with Margot Robbie headlining. An announcement that did not fail to surprise many fans, as it is rumored that the Australian actress should share the screen with Karen Gillan, the interpreter of Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy before it embody the pirate Redd. If Disney has made it a point of honor to emphasize the independent character of this reboot, it is however possible that fans will find the most famous characters in the franchise and in particular the mythical Jack Sparrow.

Embodied by Johnny Depp since 2003, the character has become over the years the iconic star of Pirates of the Caribbean, so much so that the latest creative teams wanted to make him the main hero. If the idea seemed ambitious at the time, it is clear that the box office revenues collected by the fourth and fifth part of the franchise were not those expected by the production. Furthermore, this decision ultimately limited the original scope of the story and the possibility of extending beyond Jack Sparrow’s narrative, the universe of Pirates of the Caribbean.

If the spectators have always been attached to the character, Disney could also choose to bring Johnny Depp back in the shoes of Jack Sparrow for the reboot of Pirates of the Caribbean 100% feminine, the anger of the fans could have influenced such a decision. However, the actor should not have a leading role in the story, his appearance may be limited to a simple cameo. It must be said that the latter is originally a secondary character acting as an agent of chaos. If subsequent films focused on Sparrow have finally sunk, the new reboots offer Disney a chance to breathe new life into their franchise. By focusing on other characters, creative teams could expand the universe and take a new direction.

Therefore, if Johnny Depp should be back in the shoes of Jack Sparrow – the presence of the latter representing a significant element compared to the success in theaters of the next reboots – the character should not, however, have a role as preponderant as in previous adaptations. While bringing a touch of humor and making a nostalgic nod to this saga, an appearance of Johnny Depp would allow not to produce an exclusively female reboot at the risk of missing out on original stories. It would therefore not be surprising to find the actor in this reboot, the potential trio composed of Karen Gillan and Margot Robbit being able to make sparks on the big screen!
