Pirate’s heart, from music to business

For a little over a month, Cœur de pirate has been combining her life as a singer with that of a businesswoman, since she bought the record company Dare to Care Records.

The label has since changed its name to BRAVO Music and takes care of the careers of many Quebec artists, including Jean Leloup, Émile Bilodeau and Les sœurs Boulay.

In an interview with the program “À vos affaires”, Béatrice Martin agreed to tell her new reality.

“It’s a bit of fun because we’re experiencing a lull at the professional level, I don’t have a lot of live concerts at the moment. I can therefore dive head first into this new world that awaits me, ”she said.

Asked about the management style she planned to have, she said she was going to take inspiration from what she had experienced as an artist.

“I have a fairly empathetic approach. I realized that what I learned as a Pirate Heart I could use as a business owner. To date, it helps me a bit! ”

Performing on stage and managing the careers of established or emerging singers are very different things, but that does not frighten Béatrice Martin.

“I realize that even as an artistic director, I must have access to the budget (…) to make decisions, to be able to sign new artists. OK for now! I was not the greatest “bolle” in math, but I am doing no worse, “she joked.

She added that she felt she could live her two careers in parallel.

“I think it can live in parallel. I take my role as president very seriously, and I have an excellent team to support me in day-to-day decisions. Even if I am going to do my shows, I am correct, I have a team that helps me, ”she explained.

“It’s a happy accident. I am very happy to do what I am doing today. ”

Industry and pandemic

Like many sectors, the music industry is suffering a lot from the COVID-19 pandemic as performance halls have been closed for several months.

The artist and business manager is impatiently awaiting the arrival of fine weather which could allow outdoor shows.

“As for the indoor recovery, we hope to have an answer soon. I know that a lot of people in the industry have direct contact with the government. We are waiting for answers, we are confident, ”she said.

Denunciations

As for the denunciations that rocked the entertainment world (including record label Dare to Care Records), Cœur de pirate says policies have been put in place to prevent such things from happening again.

“We have implemented a policy against harassment and other misconduct, something quite common in business. In culture, the workplace is a little different with “where it starts, where it ends”. “
