Pirates Dominate Jets in Nationaliga B Semi-Final

Pirates im Finale

In Buchs, the Argovia Pirates met the Bienna Jets in the second semi-final of the Nationaliga B. The party was considered balanced in advance, possibly even with a slight advantage for the guests, because the Jets were the only team that came to Buchs that the Pirates could not beat this year. But this time there should be a win and the championship leader after the regular season brought in a convincing 24:7. Thanks to the victory in the semifinals, the Pirates can now even look forward to a home game next Saturday, July 8, 2023. The St. Gallen Bears will then be in the final game of the SAF League B. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.

At 6 p.m. everything was ready and the semi-finals Pirates vs. Jets started in Tortuga in front of a wonderful backdrop with over 200 spectators. The Jets received the ball but were unable to use their right of attack at the start of the game and possession changed with a punt. The Pirates’ first drive was more promising. Quarterback Andrew Selway led his team down the field to the 1-yard line, where Aurele Schaub sneaked the ball into the end zone. New score due to the extra point used 7:0.

The subsequent drives were completed with punts from the respective teams, so that the Jets regained possession in the second quarter. A 15-yard penalty gave them a promising field position, which they skillfully exploited. After a longer drive, a pass to Spiller and the subsequent PAT by De Feo led to a 7:7 tie. Thus the pressure on the Pirates increased again. But you could withstand this and score again with a good drive, which was completed with a run by Matthias Frey. The score at half time was 14:7 due to the extra point used.

With the first drive in the second half, the hosts’ offense came back onto the field, which placed itself directly back in the Jets’ red zone. They knew how to take advantage of this good starting position and scored again with a nice pass from QB Andrew Selway to WR Nathan Koch. Kicker Aurele Schaub converted the PAT to 21:7.

In the 4 Quarter, the Pirates didn’t let much burn. The offensive end was set by #17 Aurele Schaub with a 48-yard field goal. The final point of the game was the Pirates defense, which definitely decided the game with an interception by Roger Galliker (with only a little time left on the clock). Final result of the game 24:7.
