/ world today news/ Pipes for the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline will start arriving at the end of the month in the ports of Varna and Burgas, announced the executive director of the Port of Burgas, Georges Dereliev.
The first shipment to our two Black Sea ports will be a total of 840 thousand tons of pipes.
Port Burgas is ready to welcome the pipes, assured Capt. Dereliev. They will be stored on the cleaned and prepared sites in 17 and 18 berths, on a total area of 50 thousand square meters. They will be removed from the arriving ships with two 100-ton cranes, which have never been seen in a Bulgarian port. More than 6 million euros have been invested in the cranes. The first delivery will be from two Russian and one European manufacturer, reports Port Burgas.
New tractors and trailers with a large load capacity were also purchased. Special gripping devices, necessary for the loading and unloading operations of heavy loads, have been developed.
The second delivery will be from Russian and Japanese manufacturers. In just a few days, the first shipment from Russia will arrive. Here, on site, the pipes, each 49 m long and weighing more than 40 t, will be welded in fours, by special machines, on a ship that will dock at berth 32, as it is the largest there, with a draft depth of 12 meters.
The underwater part of “South Stream” will be at a depth of up to 2,300 m and will be completed by four routes of four welded pipes from the companies “Saipen” and “All Seas”.
In recent months, special sites for the storage of heavy cargo with a total area of 250,000 m – paved, concreted and compressed – have been prepared in the port.
Port Burgas is one of the bases of the project for the European gas pipeline “South Stream”. Part of the pipes necessary for the construction of the sea section of the gas pipeline will be stored and stored in special premises and areas of the terminal.
