Pipe explosion on the Tepic-Guadalajara highway adds 13 deaths

The Nayarit State Attorney General’s Office reported that as a result of the processing of the place where a tanker truck carrying gas exploded, affecting other vehicles in the Tepic-Guadalajara highway, the death of 13 calcined people was confirmed.

Through its Twitter account, the agency reported that 6 of the victims were located inside a Suburban-type truck, three in a compact Cruze-type vehicle, 3 in a compact vehicle that looks like Honda, and the body of one of the dead, probably the duct or copilot of the pipe, was located on the asphalt strip.

“All the bodies are transferred to the SEMEFO in Tepic for necropsy, DNA sampling and other identification protocols,” says one of the tweets from the Prosecutor’s Office.


The Public Ministry reported a “strong pipe explosion (tank truck) that hit other vehicles on the Tepic-Guadalajara highway”, specifically at kilometer 106 between the towns of Iztlán del Río and Chapalilla.

State and municipal police, as well as members of the National Guard, Civil Protection, firefighters, public ministries, experts and forensic personnel traveled to the place.

In social networks, videos of citizens getting out of their cars and running down the road as a result of a huge column of black smoke that suddenly explodes causing a flare of several meters in what is assumed to be a second explosion.

“A few minutes ago, the Secretary of Public Safety and Protection informed me that on the Tepic-Guadalajara highway, at the height of the Jala-Compostela crossing, there was an explosion of a gas tanker, which has unfortunately left several people dead “reported the Governor of Nayarit, Antonio Echevarría.

The state president said he had “instructed that the victims be treated and supported as soon as possible.”

For its part, the National Guard reported a “closure of circulation in both directions” as a result of the explosion.


With a population of 1.2 million inhabitants, Nayarit is one of the smallest states in Mexico, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the states of Sinaloa, Durango, Zacatecas and Jalisco.
