Stephen Pioli no regrets AC Milan playing defense when losing to Inter Milan. He had carefully considered his tactics.
Milan lost 0-1 to Inter in the Italian League continued match at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Monday (6/2/2023) early morning WIB. The Snake won the duel titled Derby della Madonnina thanks to Lautaro Martinez’s single goal in the 34th minute.

La Beneamata Mata also appeared to press by releasing 15 shots with four aimed at goal. Meanwhile, Il Diavolo only made four shots and none of them met the target.
Milan looked so difficult to offset Inter. This could not be separated from the approach of the Milan coach, Stefano Pioli, who chose to play waiting to be more defensive.
Pioli chose to use a 3-5-2 formation, leaving behind the 4-2-3-1 tactics he used. Players with attacking instincts such as Brahim Diaz, Ante Rebic and Rafael Leao also only entered in the second half.
Pioli’s decision to play defensively was considered a mistake until Milan lost to Inter. However, the former Fiorentina coach insists he has absolutely no regrets about adopting a more defensive approach in the Derby della Madonnina.
He had thought about this decision carefully because Milan had been so fragile in the last few matches. Milan had conceded 14 goals in the four games before facing Inter.
“Our record in the last few games shows that we suffer a lot when we concede so many goals, so we need to create more density to protect the defence. That doesn’t take away from the fact that we also need to create attacking situations and take the initiative, which is what we want to do.” said Pioli quoted from Football Italia.
These results make Inter now collect 43 in second place. They are still 13 points behind Napoli at the top of the standings. Meanwhile, Milan is sixth with 38 points.
