The singer Pink will donate this Wednesday (11/15/2023), at a concert in Florida, books that have been banned in public libraries and schools as part of a national ban promoted by Republican politicians, including the state’s governor, Ron DeSantis, who aspires to the American presidency.
The American will make the donations at the concert she will offer tonight in Sunrise, a city in southeastern Florida, as part of a campaign that already distributed books at another of her concerts, last Tuesday night at the Kaseya Center in Miami.
“It is especially hateful to see authorities targeting books about race and racism, and LGBTQ and authors of color. We have made so much progress toward equality in this country and no one should want this progress to be reversed,” Pink said in a statement. .
Florida is the state with the largest book ban
The donation of some 2,000 books during her performances in South Florida is the result of a collaboration that the Grammy winner has made with the PEN America organization and the Miami Books & Books bookstore, and among the donated books are titles such as ‘The Family Book’ by Todd Parr, ‘The Hill We Climb’ by Amanda Gorman, or ‘Beloved’ by Toni Morrison.
All of them are part of a list of at least 300 titles, many of which have or address LGBTQ themes, that are no longer on the shelves of public libraries and schools in some of Florida’s 67 counties.
According to PEN America, Florida is the state with the highest number of book banning cases, more than 1,400 (although not all have been effectively removed from libraries), and the highest number of school districts, 33, that removed books in the last school year.
The concerts are part of the world tour that Pink began in June of this year and will continue until March 2024.
