PRAGUE – Pilsenský Prazdroj does not want to support the Olympics in Paris under the current conditions. The official partner of the Czech Olympic Committee is withdrawing from all communication towards the Olympic Games. He will send the money to Czech athletes.
He was reacting to the decision of the International Olympic Committee, which allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to start at the 2024 Olympics. It will continue to financially support Czech sports and the funds intended to support the Olympics will go to Czech athletes, brewery spokesman Zdeněk Kovář told ČTK. The WWTP appreciated that Plzenský Prazdroj remains its partner and will support Czech athletes. He did not comment on his withdrawal from the Olympic campaign because he considers it an internal matter for the company.
“After an agreement with the Czech Olympic Committee, Pilsner Urquell has decided to withdraw all communications related to the Summer Olympics in Paris. It is also not preparing its own campaign on the occasion of the Games, as was the case in the past,” added Kovář. It is not clear how exactly it will turn out at the WWTP. “That is an internal matter of the company, which we will continue to discuss and it is not our place to comment at this time,” said the WWTP in a statement to ČTK.
Last week, CPI Property Group, which was also one of its official partners, announced the end of cooperation with the Czech Olympic Committee. By leaving the Olympic movement, the company also responded to the decision of the International Olympic Committee on the start of the Russians and Belarusians in Paris. It was supposed to contribute 25 to 30 million crowns to the budget of the WWTP over a four-year cycle.
While this company ended its partnership with the WWTP, the brewery decided to give the money resulting from the contract to support Czech athletes and the development of sports facilities. Marketing manager of Pilsner Urquell Zuzana Dudová said that the brewery wants to continue to celebrate the achievements of Czech athletes, but at events that are in line with its values.
“But at the same time, we are not going to let up on the support we give them, and we want to fulfill the financial performance we have committed to,” she stated. The WWTP welcomed this attitude. “We appreciate that Pilsner Urquell continues to stand by Czech athletes and is still our partner even in this troubled time.” he stated.
Prazdroj stated that he has supported Czech Olympians for over 20 years in the name of values such as fairness, humanism and human belonging. “We hoped that they would also be reflected in the upcoming Olympics. Unfortunately, the decision of the International Olympic Committee, despite the efforts and disagreement of the Czech Olympic Committee, is not in accordance with these principles. The upcoming Olympic Games thus become a political matter, and under the current conditions we do not want these actively support the games,” said the marketing manager.
According to the spokesperson, Prazdroj has clearly defined itself against the Russian invasion of Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict. It supported a number of humanitarian activities, stopped exporting its products to Russia and Belarus immediately after the start of the conflict, and this decision continues. “We appreciate all the humanitarian activities of Pilsner Urquell towards Ukraine as well as the clear demarcation against the Russian attack. Our position is also clear, we condemn Russian aggression and we do not agree with any form of participation of Russia and Belarus in the qualifications for the Olympic Games or in the Games themselves during the duration of the conflict on of Ukraine,” CHOV commented on it.
Pilsner Urquell continues to support Czech hockey. “We are the main partner of the hockey national team, both men’s and women’s,” said Dudová.
