Pilot program to supply food in Brooklyn opens

Community organizations and religious centers come together to launch “Flushing Food Collaborative”, or the “Flushing food collective” an initiative that seeks to fill the void left by the closure of the well-known non-profit organization, “La Jornada”.

Community members came together this Saturday to launch this pilot program to help local residents after the only food pantry in downtown Flushing was evicted from Bland Houses by the New York Housing Authority, NYCHA. .

The free distribution of groceries from the Flushing Food Collective will take place every Thursday beginning at 1:00 p.m. in front of the Flushing Free Synagogue located at 136-23 Sanford Avenue.

Food packages will be provided free of charge while supplies last.

The announcement comes after another organization, “La Colmena” in Staten Island, is at risk of losing a significant sum of funds to continue operating, after the minority leader in the City Council accused it of “playing politics”.
