Today is the 25th anniversary of Pokémon, one of the most successful video game franchises in history that has marked an entire generation.
Although they started as only 151, the family of pocket monsters has grown over the years and different video games and new regions in the anime have come off their way.
That is why to celebrate the new anniversary of Pokémon, we bring you these 10 facts about its different editions and creatures.
10 facts about Pokémon
1- “Pokemon” is not a Japanese word. This was the name that the game acquired when the West arrived, since in Japan they were called “Pocket Monsters”. “Pokémon” is a mix between the two words.
2- Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan -two fighting-type Pokémon- are inspired by martial artists Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.
3- Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of “Pokémon” and GameFreak was a disciple of the best video game creator in history, Shigeru Miyamoto. Miyamoto is the creator of games like “Donkey Kong”, “Super Mario” and “The Legend Of Zelda”.
4- To create the game, Tajiri was inspired by his childhood. When he was little, the Japanese captured insects and exchanged them with those that his friends obtained.
5- “Pokémon” has sold more than 200 million copies and has earned around 40 billion dollars. It is the second largest franchise in history, after “Super Mario.”
6- Miyamoto was the one who recommended to Tajiri that the editions be sold in two different cartridges, in order to encourage people to exchange Pokémon with each other.
7- In the first videogames -Red, Blue and Yellow- there were only 151 Pokémon. Today there are 890 official Pokémon! By the way … Do you remember the Pokerap?
8- In 2008, the scientist Shigeru Sato discovered a new protein and named it «Pikachurin». According to him, the protein bore a resemblance to the Pokémon Pikachu.
9- 20 years ago, the game “Pokemon Crystal” was ahead of what we know today as “Pokemon Go”. In that edition, a device was included – which was sold separately – that could be connected to cell phones. Thanks to that, you could exchange Pokémon for the phone signal. 20 years before “Pokemon Go”! Did they have it? It was of millionaires ????
10- In 1998 “Pokemon Yellow, Special Pikachu Edition” was released, the third game that came after “Blue” and “Red”. This game was almost identical to the previous two, but the big difference was that the first pokemon you get is a Pikachu. This pokemon literally walks by your side throughout the game, creating an experience very similar to the anime story starring Ash Ketchum.
