Pigeons Demonstrate Problem-Solving Abilities Resembling Artificial Intelligence Algorithms, Study Finds

New research: Pigeons can solve problems in an artificial intelligence-like way

Xinhua News Agency, London, October 28 (Reporter Guo Shuang) Although pigeons are not usually known for their intelligence, a new study shows that pigeons can solve an extremely wide range of visual classification tasks and can use “brute force algorithms” similar to artificial intelligence models. way to solve some problems.

Previous research has shown that pigeons can learn to solve complex classification tasks. The researchers speculate that the pigeons solve the problem in a way similar to the “brute force algorithm” used in artificial intelligence models, which is the simplest and most intuitive algorithm in pattern matching.

This speculation has been confirmed by researchers from Ohio State University in the United States, and the relevant research results were recently published in the international journal “Cross Science”. Evidence shows that pigeons’ learning mechanisms are similar to those of modern machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques. The artificial intelligence model used in this study and the pigeons’ problem-solving methods are both “associative learning” and “error correction.”

In the study, pigeons were asked to sort objects by pecking buttons on the right or left: if they answered correctly, they received food; if they answered incorrectly, they received nothing. There were 4 different tasks in the study, some were more difficult than others. The results showed that through trial and error, the pigeons increased the proportion of correct choices in a simpler test from about 55% to 95%. Among relatively difficult questions, its “correctness rate” also increased from 55% to 68%.

Nature may have found a way to make pigeons a very efficient learner, but it still can’t generalize or extrapolate as well as humans, researchers say.
