Jakarta –
Pigeon mail is one of the oldest forms of long-distance communication, capable of relaying messages hundreds of miles with relative speed and accuracy. Old informal tests show they can beat Internet speeds under certain conditions, but how do pigeon homing compare to fiber optic connections?
Recent tests have shown that, over relatively short distances, pigeons can transmit information faster than the standard gigabit internet. This process emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between speed and bandwidth.
In 2009, a carrier pigeon carried a 4GB memory card 60 miles (100 kilometers), faster than South Africa’s internet services could complete transmitting that amount of data. Merpati takes two hours to reach its destination, while the internet connection is only able to transmit 4% of data.
Content creator Jeff Geerling published more rigorous testing results confirming that pigeons could theoretically beat current fiber-optic connections by around 500 miles (804.7 kilometers). While he couldn’t fly a pigeon 500 miles compared to the standard gigabit internet, the math from his simulation worked.
First, Geerling determined that a single pigeon could carry three 1TB USB drives on a single trip, even though the pack was hitting the limit on the size the bird could comfortably carry. He then took the USB drive on an airline flight from Saint Louis to Nova Scotia while uploading 3TB of data between the two locations.
Copying the data from the laptop to USB, flying to Nova Scotia and copying it to the computer there took six hours and 53 minutes, while the gigabit transfer took 10 hours and 54 minutes.
Since airplanes travel at about 800 km/h and the average speed of a pigeon is about 80 km/h, Geerling calculated that the jet could exceed a transfer speed of 3 TB gigabits within 5,000 miles (equivalent to 8,046.7 kilometers), whereas Pigeons can do it within 500 miles.
