New York. It is a real milestone in medicine. For the first time a pig kidney was successfully transplanted into a human. Dr. Robert Montgomery, a doctor with the Langone Clinic Group in New York, had spent three years working towards this moment. It was a real breakthrough for the doctor and his team.
The procedure was performed on a brain-dead woman who had donated her body to research. The kidney was inserted into the woman, connected to her bloodstream and finally only separated with clamps, like “USA Today“Now reported.
Removing the staples would reveal whether the procedure was successful. In the worst case, the organ would turn blue and the woman’s immune system would attack the foreign organ because the body rejects it. Had this happened, it would have set the medical professionals back years in their research.

But things turned out differently and the operation was a success. After Montgomery released the clamps, the organ turned red, that is, supplied with blood. A good sign. Shortly afterwards, urine was also produced via the new kidney. The surgeon began to cheer in the operating room.
Even two days after the operation, the organ continued to function properly. “It went even better than I had hoped for,” said the doctor.
The result could be hope for the myriad of people waiting for a donor organ around the world. But with all the cheers, there are still many questions unanswered.
The main issue here is the organ’s longevity. The findings of the surgery carried out in September 2021 have also not yet been published in any specialist magazine. (mei)
