Twenty-two-year-old Piastri beat teammate Norris by 82 thousandths of a second. Verstappen, who won qualifying for Sunday’s main race on Friday, was 192 thousandths behind Piastri.
Verstappen leads the championship standings by 177 points ahead of Mexican Red Bull teammate Sergio Pérez. The Dutchman will celebrate the title today if he finishes the worst of sixth, or if Pérez does not finish in the top three. The Mexican was ninth in qualifying.
Qualifying for the short race started 20 minutes later, as drivers were given an unscheduled 10 minutes to familiarize themselves with the track, which had undergone minor changes following Friday’s programme. The tire supplier Pirelli discovered that riders were wearing tires excessively on the curbs, so some sections of the track were modified.
