Pieter Omtzigt’s New Social Contract: The Major Challenger in Dutch Elections 2023

October 6, 2023

New Social Contract. Pieter Omtzigt’s new party has not yet existed for two months, but it is the major challenger in the coming elections. What do Omtzigt and his candidates want to change in the Netherlands? The party leader joins Op1 together with the entire top 20 of his candidate list.

Pieter Omtzigt is the party leader of New Social Contract. The great brand new challenger, who is trying to change The Hague after a long road full of peaks and valleys. The party leader joins the top twenty of his new party: New Social Contract, consistently high in the polls. Men and women of whom we can assume that they will all end up in the House of Representatives, but why did they choose to support Omtzigt?

Biologist Rosanne Hertzberger is number 17 on the list and wants to enter the House of Representatives on behalf of the New Social Contract. “It arose at the beginning of the corona crisis. I wrote a column for NRC and I am a microbiologist. That meant that I often found myself commenting in my column, on the sidelines. I really felt the need to go to the front and make a change.”

That change must therefore happen in Omtzigt’s new party. But what does that party stand for? After a few weeks there is still no election manifesto in sight. The party leader is the first to say that he wants to reduce migration to a maximum of 50,000 people per year.

Dutch language of instruction at universities

One of the ways in which he wants to achieve this is to limit student migration. According to Omtzigt, Dutch universities are flooded with foreign students. His solution: make the official language Dutch again. “There are entire courses that almost exclusively have foreign students. There are even universities that have more foreign students than Dutch students.”

And so the main language must return to Dutch. “If you learn Dutch and want to become part of society here, it is no problem. And if lessons need to be taught in English occasionally, that is no problem. It is not a banned language, but the standard language in which lessons are taught is your own language,” said the party leader.

Of course, the Netherlands does not only have study migrants. If Omtzigt has his way, asylum should also be limited and he is clear about how this should be achieved: family reunification must be limited.

Family migration

“You can limit family migration from 25 to 18 years,” says the party leader. But are family members no longer allowed to come over? Omtzigt: “We are going to look carefully at how far we can go with this, but further migration is not wise. What happened was that people who were 20/21 already had a family of their own and were then able to bring their own family over as well. Then of course you don’t belong to the nuclear family. This concerns a relatively small group.”

In the Netherlands you never rule alone. And although Pieter Omtzigt is high in the polls, he will also have to cooperate with other parties to realize his plans. Which parties, if any, does he have in mind?

Who does Omtzigt want to govern with?

Politically, his plans to limit migration may be the most difficult. After all, a government fell on that. In order to achieve his plans, collaboration with parties such as VVD or BBB is an obvious choice. “We will first see what the voter will do. If you look at the political spectrum, I can easily imagine that migration restriction is easier with the parties mentioned. A number of other matters, such as social security, are easier with other parties. But that’s why you have government negotiations.”
