Pieter Omtzigt, the leader of the New Brussels Sprout Coalition (NSC), who was only handled with silk gloves for months, is under fire for the first time this election campaign. NOS reports.
GroenLinks-PvdA leader Frans Timmermans and D66 leader Rob Jetten accuse Omtzigt of lack of clarity. Worrying Pieter seems to have a lot of trouble making decisions – not really a recommendation for someone who may end up in the Torentje after the elections.
Omtzigt remains vague not only about a possible premiership. “We make the choice to make wealthy people pay more,” Timmermans explains. “We do this so that we can significantly increase the minimum wage to 16 euros. Omtzigt does not want to make that choice. And we don’t know what he wants. If you have the ambition to govern the country, you also have to make choices.”
VVD leader Dilan Yeşilgöz has difficulty with a number of “archaic conservative ideas” from the NSC leader. With Omtzigt, who earlier this week philosophized out loud about a cabinet with JA21 and the SGP, women’s rights are not in safe hands. According to Yeşilgöz, the former CDA member has conservative ideas about women, which encourages families “to have one stay at home”. Omtzigt previously opposed the abolition of the mandatory reflection period for abortion.
The progressive parties and Yeşilgöz also lashed out on Thursday at the leader of an intended coalition partner of Omtzigt, Chris Stoffer. The SGP member joined during an intimidation campaign at an abortion clinic in South Rotterdam. “Deeply sad and disturbing,” says Jesse Klaver of GroenLinks-PvdA.
