Pieter Omtzigt is open to becoming Prime Minister of the Netherlands, but only if the cabinet consists of experts in their own field. The NSC party leader said this on Sunday Outside court.
Omtzigt has emphasized in recent weeks that he has a clear preference for the party chairmanship after the elections. Yet the former CDA member, who is participating in the elections for the first time with his party NSC, never said that he does not want to become prime minister. He breaks that silence.
“I still have a firm preference for the party chairmanship. But if it were possible to have a government with specialist ministers, without a rigid coalition agreement, then I would be open to becoming prime minister,” Omtzigt said.
The politician emphasized Outside court that he would only want to become prime minister if his party emerges victorious in the elections. It has been known for some time that the NSC party leader prefers a cabinet containing experts.
Omtzigt believes that the House of Representatives should have more say
Omtzigt also wants the House of Representatives to have more say. “In recent years I have seen ministers who, at the last minute, completely distanced themselves from policies that the opposition had long said were not good,” Omtzigt said on Sunday.
“If it were possible to get a government with specialist ministers that could be properly monitored, then you could shape reforms from the cabinet. I could do that.”
