Pierre Soulages painting soon to be auctioned in New York could break new record

Are we heading towards a new sales record? A painting by Pierre Soulages goes on sale in New York on November 18. This work entitled “Painting” (195x130cm) dating from 1961 is estimated between 8 and 12 million dollars (i.e. between 6.90 and 10.36 million euros). For now, the most expensive painting by the Aveyron painter has been sold for 9.6 million euros, while the initial estimate was between 4 and 6 million euros. “We will undoubtedly beat the record“, estimates Michel Hilaire, director of the Fabre museum in Montpellier, where rooms are dedicated to the artist who has been living in Sète for several years.

For this red and black canvas, it’s a “quite different scraping technique, which reveals undercoats of paint, and which creates a striking and very powerful chiaroscuro“, explains Michel Hilaire.”We are not at all in the technique of Outrenoirs“, he continues. A very similar painting from the same period is currently on display at the Fabre museum in Montpellier. At the time, it broke the sales record, sold nine million euros to an anonymous buyer who had decided to lend it to the Musée Fabre for at least two years.
