According to a spokesperson for Hessink’s auction house in the Overijssel capital, it is the artist’s largest work that has ever been offered for auction.
The original work was even larger, but only the rat’s torso could be detached. Hessink’s previously sold some of Banksy’s street art to owners of homes the artist had painted on. Banksy believes that the art he puts on public walls belongs to everyone, but owners of the properties in question often think differently, the auction house said earlier.
It’s often hard to tell if a Banksy is real, but Hessink’s has no doubts about the rat. This work has been known as a true Banksy from the start.
The auction was supposed to be Tuesday evening but had to be moved to Wednesday evening. There were technical problems and therefore not everyone could bid (online).
