PICTURE: Victory Day was celebrated by a pieta in Vítkov | iRADIO

Pieta in Prague’s Vítkov commemorated the 79th anniversary of the end of World War II. In addition to soldiers, castle guards, veterans and the church, President Petr Pavel and other top constitutional officials also celebrated Victory Day. After the pieta, the state representatives moved to Prague Castle, where the president promoted thirteen people to various general ranks, including the head of the BIS, Michal Koudelka, who is now a major general.

Even this year, politicians compared the Second World War to the conflict in Ukraine and emphasized the need for further support for the Ukrainian forces. “Our duty is to gather all the forces, possibilities, resources so that they can win their fight, which they are also fighting for us,” said Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS) to the Ukrainians in Prague’s Vítkov.

Traditionally, wreaths were placed at the grave of an unknown soldier during a solemn memorial ceremony. Both the highest constitutional officials and representatives of Prague’s parliamentary opposition as well as veterans’ associations and veterans themselves arrived.

According to BIS director Koudelka, the public has greater expectations of the security forces due to the worsening situation in the world. “We are determined to do everything to ensure that the Czech Republic remains one of the safest countries in the world and a pleasant place to live,” he said after his promotion to major general at Prague Castle.

The President praised the work of those promoted, and according to him, responsibility and loyalty are associated with a higher rank. “And not in the sense of loyalty to an individual politician, but to this country,” the president added.
