NEW YORK — Authorities arrest a pickup truck driver for allegedly striking and killing a 7-year-old girl just steps from her home after failing to come to a complete stop at a Queens intersection, police said.
The deadly collision claimed the life of Naadhun Dolma, who lived a few houses from the intersection where he died following the incident on the night of February 17, police said.
According to the preliminary report, the driver of a Ford Explorer, Claudia Méndez Vásquez, 46, struck the minor as she entered the intersection of Newtown Road y 45th Street in Astoria shortly before 6 p.m. It was not immediately clear if Naadhun was walking into a crosswalk.
Responding police officers picked up the girl and rushed her to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Mendez Vasquez, authorities say, entered the intersection after failing to come to a complete stop. She remained in place and almost two months later she was finally charged with criminally negligent homicide.
Information from Mendez Vasquez’s attorney was not immediately clear.
