[Pick] Menu painted colorful mural… Excavation of’fast food restaurants’ in ancient Rome

In the ancient Roman era, a’convenience restaurant’, which was used by the common people to solve a simple meal at low cost, was unearthed in full form after 2,000 years.

On the 26th local time, the Pompeii Archaeological Park, which preserves and manages the Pompeii ruins, unearthed and unveiled the ruins of a eatery that sold street food.

On the wall of the presumed place, there are a rooster, a drooping duck, a dog tied with a leash, and a sea nymph (a goddess or fairy in Greek and Roman mythology) riding a seahorse.

It is hard to believe that it was painted 2,000 years ago. The colors and image forms of the murals are vividly alive, and animals expressed in pictures are believed to have been used as food ingredients.

Along with this, several jars with the remnants of food at the time, such as paella made with fish and meat, and goat, pig, cow, snail, and wine with ground beans, were excavated and attracted attention.

The eatery unearthed this time is known to be the first of the 80 eateries unearthed so far, and the most preserved. An official from the Pompeii Archaeological Park said that food residues are an important clue to what kind of food was mainly consumed by the ancient Romans, and plans to conduct further research.

Pompeii was one of the most prosperous cities of the Roman Empire, but in 79 AD, the Vesuvius eruption quickly turned into ruins.

Today, it has been excavated to a level where you can guess the shape of the city in the past, and after being registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, it has become a tourist attraction visited by millions of tourists a year.
