A painting he made was sold Pablo Picasso In 1932, titled “Woman of the Hour,” it was sold at Sotheby’s in New York for $139 million. This is the second highest price achieved by Picasso at a public auction.
Before the sale, the estimated price for the painting was $120 million upon request, and demand for it reached $139 million. The painting depicts Picasso’s young muse during the 1930s, Marie-Thérèse Walter, according to the Art News website.
Picasso maintained a close relationship with Walter for several years, a relationship that began when the artist, who was 45 years old, became involved with the 17-year-old through the window of the Galeries Lafayette in Paris. He was inspired by paintings, drawings and sculptures, some of which are considered the greatest. Works from Picasso’s eight-decade career.
“Picasso is about passion, but this specific passion for watches is something that is not generally recognized,” said Simon Shaw, Sotheby’s vice president of global fine art.
He continued: “He was an incredibly elegant man, very interested in his identity in clothing, and a great connoisseur of watches, and even pictures of him wearing his watches are appreciated by watch collectors.”
The painting was purchased in 1968 by Emily Fisher Landau, one of the greatest art collectors of the 20th century, and she hung it above the mantelpiece in the living room of her New York apartment. By the time of her death at the age of 102, earlier this year, Her art collection could have filled many museums.
