According to the concert organizers, the first “Piano Day” was celebrated on March 29, 2015, when, at the suggestion of the German pianist and composer Nils Frahm, everyone in the world was invited to pay tribute to this instrument and the music created for it. Now the celebration of the 88th day of the year (referring to 88 piano keys) has become a tradition and will take place for the eighth time this year.

“Why does the world need Piano Day? The reasons are various. Mainly because it is not a bad thing to glorify this instrument and everything related to it – to highlight the performers, composers, piano builders, tuners and carriers, and most of all – the listeners!” said the author of the idea, Nils Frames.

The first Piano Day in Ventspils was disrupted by pandemic conditions two years ago. It could not have happened last year either. “With reasonable hopes, the end of March is expected to mark the 88th day of the year with amazing and different musical concerts by two bright, internationally acclaimed pianists, allowing listeners to experience both the different sounds of the instrument and the personality of each artist as author and performer.” the organizers of the article.

The first part of the concert will feature music by American pianist Robert Flick, who was once called an “innovative thinker in music” by the “New York Concert Review” and who creates this program for Ventspils. Roberts will perform in an unusual company with Pēteris Vasks and Krists Auznieks, as well as works for piano by Molly Joyce and Julia Perry, which have not yet been performed in Latvia.

Robert Flaic started playing the piano at the age of four with his father. He later completed both bachelor’s and master’s degrees at The Julliard School with lecturers in Hung-Kuan Chen and Julian Martin. The musician still has professional ties with his father, Patrick Fleitz, who are both founders and curators of the Swan City Piano Festival and bring together artists from a variety of piano genres in his hometown of Lakeland, Florida.

According to Roberts Fleics himself, he is “with one foot in Riga, with the other – still in New York”, because he is currently studying at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music with Juris Žvikovs, but from time to time he goes home to give concerts and get involved in other creative projects. Most recently, in October last year, Robert Flick made his solo concert debut at Carnegie Hall in New York. Fascinated by a composition that focuses on the ecology of quirers, the occult possibilities of technology, and the spontaneous well-being of people, Robert is keen to respond to calls from other musicians and bands to create new works for them. His music is performed by both the Metropolis Ensemble and Hilary Easton Dance Company in New York, as well as the Lithuanian piano duo Twenty Fingers Duo.

John, including Ventspils, has already met John Camillar in Fara. Immediately after the opening of the concert hall “Latvija” in the summer of 2019, the musician and his colleagues gave a concert, performing not only the work of Steve Reich for six pianos “Six Pianos”, but also his original music.

Born in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, the artist studied piano and composition at the University of Toronto, winning the Glenn Gould Award twice during his studies. After studying, John Camille travels to the West Coast of the United States to spend time in California with Terry Riley, who becomes his tutor. The Arab Music Retreat in Hartford is also temporarily a refuge, residence and place of inspiration for John Camille Faro. The musician is now called Berlin and his recordings are published by the prominent Neue Meister. Between solo concerts in European concert halls and from time to time in underground clubs, John Camille and his colleagues refresh the Reich’s “Six Pianos” project.
