Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Italian scooter manufacturer Piaggio has officially formed a consortium with Honda Motorcycles, KTM AG and Yamaha Motor Co. which will drive a battery swap system for electric motorcycles.
The consortium, named the Swapable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SBMC), aims to expand the use of light electric vehicles, such as scooters, mopeds, and motorcycles. The consortium also wants to support continuous battery management.
In a statement the consortium said it would focus on issues such as battery life, recharging time, infrastructure and cost. In addition, the consortium will also determine technical specifications regarding international standards for exchangeable batteries.
The companies in the consortium said they welcome others to join so they can extend the standard to as many companies as possible.
“Urban mobility is going through a difficult moment of transition to electrification. Thanks to this consortium, motorcycles will continue to play a key role,” said Piaggio Chief of Strategy and Product Michele Colaninno quoting Reuters, Monday (6/9).
Meanwhile, Chief Officer of Honda Motorcycle Operations Yoshishige Nomura added that the consortium aims to make electric motorcycles more comfortable.
“Because its use on a large scale can substantially contribute to the creation of a more sustainable society,” said Nomura.
