The Local Health Authority of Piacenza participated in the 57th National Congress of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health (S.It.I.) of Palermo with various poster presentations which highlighted the high professionalism in the various services with a view to collaboration between different disciplines for innovation and research.
The experience on the strategies to combat antibiotic resistance implemented by the Local Health Authority of Piacenza was the subject of the doctor’s presentation Paola Cellaspokesperson for a choral work that involved Innovation and Research, Clinical Processes and Accredited Structures, Infectious diseases, Hospital pharmacy, Microbiology, Hygiene of healthcare facilities and the General and Health Directorates.
Antimicrobial resistance represents a global health emergency that requires concrete actions to ensure effective therapies against increasingly difficult-to-treat infections. In this context, the Local Health Authority of Piacenza has started a program of Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) with the aim of improving prescriptive appropriateness, directing the choice of drug, dose, route of administration and duration of therapy. Thanks to the commitment of Operational group for the responsible use of antibioticsthe Piacenza company has proven to be a virtuous example in the multidisciplinary management of antimicrobial therapy, adopting a series of innovative initiatives aimed at promoting correct prescription with the aim of reducing the duration and costs of therapies according to a cost-effective logic.
The doctor Maria Grazia Procopio oversaw the presentation of the project VI.Si.T.A.REacronym for visits for safety, transparency and reliability, made with Beatrice Zerbi e Maria Grazia Silvotti for medical management, Giampietro Scaglione director of Prevention and protection service, Franco Federici director of the single Presidium, Giuseppe Arcari for General Affairs and institutional relations.
The study focuses on the risks to which healthcare personnel may be exposed. The analysis was conducted in collaboration with professionals who highlighted potentially risky situations. From here the proposals to create greater security started. The project was launched at the Mental Health Center in 2023 with the aim of improving quality and safety and led to the implementation of structural, plant and organizational interventions which had the aim of improving the safety of operators.
The doctor Beatrice Zerbi presented an interesting study on the surveillance and control of a group of bacteria resistant to antibiotics – the carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae or Cpe – and on their spread among patients in retirement homes, written in synergy with Maria Grazia Silvotti, Pasquale Salvatore Turanodirector of Territorial geriatrics, Barbara Paradisi of the Territorial Organization of non-self-sufficiency Val d’Arda e Franco Federici.
The guidelines for the surveillance of multi-resistant bacteria highlight how Cra patients are more exposed to bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Of these, carbapenemase-producing enterobacteria are extremely dangerous because, with a high mortality rate of up to 70% in bacteremia, they combine extreme ease of spread between patients. In 2024, Hygiene of the healthcare facilities of the Piacenza Local Health Authority launched a project to analyze the situation in homes for the elderly. The investigation showed that the Cras correctly apply the actions to contain the spread of bacteria, but there is a lack of knowledge on the topic of surveillance. The Company has therefore already planned a training event dedicated to the practices and protocols for the diagnosis, surveillance and control of carbapenemase-producing enterobacteria.

The metaverse is rapidly evolving from a sci-fi concept to a tangible reality, poised to transform how we interact, work, and play. To shed light on this burgeoning digital landscape, we sat down with two renowned experts: Dr. Elena Ramirez, a professor of computer science specialized in virtual reality, and Mark Thompson, CEO of a leading metaverse development company. Our discussion aimed to uncover the metaverse’s potential benefits, challenges, and implications for our future.
### Diving into the Metaverse: Definitions and Potential
**Dr. Ramirez.**:
> “The metaverse broadly refers to interconnected virtual worlds where users can interact with each other and digital environments in immersive and persistent ways. Imagine a seamless blend of social media, gaming, and online experiences, but taken to a whole new level of immersion through technologies like VR and AR.”
**Mark Thompson:**
> “Beyond entertainment, the metaverse holds immense potential for diverse sectors. Think of virtual training simulations for professions, immersive educational experiences, and decentralized, community-driven online platforms.”
### The Metaverse and Society: Opportunities and Concerns
**What are the biggest potential benefits of the metaverse for individuals and society as a whole?**
**Dr. Ramirez:**
> “The metaverse can foster a sense of global community, connecting people across geographical barriers. It can also create new avenues for creativity, learning, and self-expression. For instance, imagine attending a virtual concert with friends from around the world or collaborating on a design project in a shared 3D space.”
**Mark Thompson:**
> “The metaverse can democratize access to opportunities. Think about remote work becoming even more immersive and engaging, or students learning complex topics through interactive simulations. It can level the playing field by providing access to resources and experiences regardless of physical location.”
However, concerns exist regarding potential downsides.
**Mark Thompson:**
>“Privacy and data security are paramount concerns within virtual worlds. We need robust regulations and ethical frameworks to ensure user safety and prevent misuse of data. We also need to address the potential for digital divide and avoid exacerbating inequalities.”
### Building the Future: Regulation, Investment, and Ethical Considerations
**What role should governments and businesses play in shaping the metaverse?**
**Dr. Ramirez:**
> “Collaboration is key. Governments should establish clear guidelines for data privacy, content moderation, and accessibility, while businesses need to prioritize ethical development practices and user safety. Open-source platforms and community involvement are crucial for ensuring a decentralized and inclusive metaverse.”
**Investing in the metaverse is becoming a major trend. Where do you see the most promising investment opportunities?**
**Mark Thompson:**
> “There’s huge potential in areas like virtual real estate, digital assets, and immersive entertainment.
