If you’re up industrial design (in general) it becomes much less of a black box.
Mass production involves enormous investments.
But of course you start with sketches and prototypes of clay/foam/wood/3D printing etc. and simple electronics and then test and detail it more and more. That takes a lot of time and money.
Then the production itself: You use plastic products in high quantities injection molding machines. One mold (type of casting mould) for 1 plastic part can easily cost several hundred thousand euros. And then you have the factory itself, assembly line, and all the supply of components. And if there turns out to be a problem with your product, you have a huge problem, so testing is also an important part of the process.
